This week’s featured business is Angel Fire Resort’s New Nordic Center.
This week I had my very first lesson in cross country skiing at the new Angel Fire Nordic Center. Assistant Director Christine Tohama was my personal instructor. You know, after having been told by Rob over at Angel Fire Physical Therapy that I really needed to work on my core strength and balance issues, this week it was put to the test!
I am so excited about the Resort opening up this new Nordic Center! It has cross country ski trails & snowshoe loops that meander throughout the golf course grounds. You will encounter breath taking views and possibly an elk sighting as you glide across the snow. They plan to have lots of group adventures that include moonlight ski, nature tours, gourmet tours, kids programs and much more. I say it is the perfect new addition to the Angel Fire Resort’s already fun filled schedule for this winter season. You and I and our guests have so many reasons to get outside and play!
I was very encouraged by Christine’s expert yet non intimidating advise during my lesson. She will be teaching group and private cross country ski lessons. Originally from Paris, France, Christine has been a resident of Ranchos de Taos for 8 years. Prior to that for 23 years, she owned and operated a summer bicycle/kayak shop in Grand Lake, Colo. In the winter time she would work at their Nordic Center. So when this position came available, she was very happy to apply. And I found out that she is a newly wed. She and Tutak were married a year ago Jan. She lit up when she was telling me about him!
Lou Awodey, the Director at the Nordic Center comes to the Resort from Boyne, Michigan where he was the Ski Director for 25 years. I met him at the Business after Hours last week briefly and found him to be a friendly personable guy. During my lesson he was out with the snowmobile groomers making sure the tracks will be ready for today’s opening day. He too will be available to teach private and group lessons.
A sledding hill and snow play area will be open at the Nordic Center Fri thru Sun. from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Sleds are available in the Nordic Shop as well as Nordic skis, boots and snow shoes rentals. The Angel Fire Nordic Center is located in the Angel Fire Country Club where after your ski or snowshoe trek, you may want to utilize their facilities which are open to the public. These include a swimming pool, fitness center, locker rooms, showers, retail store, and in the evening fine dining at Elements.
