Mary Domito – Taos Lifestyle Featuring Sleep Sanctuary
July will mark the nine-year anniversary for Taos Lifestyle/Sleep Sanctuary. And for nine years running it has been elected “Best of Taos.” Owner Mary Domito, affectionately known as Mattress Mary, is the main reason. Her energy and smile are infectious. Her desire to truly go the extra mile stands in the forefront of all she accomplishes. Quality furniture and accessories, the best selection of high-quality mattresses, and customer-first consultative service are the top priorities!
When Mary and I spoke at our Angel Fire Chamber Dinner she said, “I want to furnish Angel Fire.” I liked her enthusiasm, but at that time, I had no idea her store, Taos Lifestyle featuring Sleep Sanctuary, was more than a place where just mattresses are sold. Not only is it the largest Serta retailer in Northern New Mexico, but it is also a full-end furniture store.
When I was there last week I spoke with a few of her employees. All of them have worked for Mary at least five years, and they enjoy a lighthearted, cohesive, and fun working environment. That’s a great sign. (I believe when employees stay at an establishment, something good is happening!) When the store opened, Mary had two employees; now there are seven, including delivery. And yes, they deliver to Angel Fire. They will work around your schedule. Mary told me Taos Lifestyle takes the delivery process very seriously. They are entering into your private space and they strive to do so respectfully.
Mary spent most of her life in the Bay area of San Francisco, California. Then in 2000, she made a trip to Taos to visit an old friend. It was love at first sight. She said the people were friendlier than anywhere she had ever been, the culture rich, and the beauty unmatched. The next summer she came back. The pull manifested stronger until she got to the point of knowing Taos would be her home. While in California, she had worked for the country’s largest mattress chain, so opening a mattress store was the natural venue. By 2004 Sleep Sanctuary was open and the fun began!
Over the years Mary has become heavily involved with the community of Taos and the surrounding areas. She works hard behind the scenes to raise money for various local non-profits. Now in its third year, her “Dog Days of Summer” fundraising event benefits the Stray Heart Animal Shelter.
When Mary came to Taos she was unmarried and uninterested. The business came first. Little did she know she’d quickly meet the love of her life and be eight years happily married by 2013! She and artist Mark Gould met at a dinner group they both attended. She said after a year of seeing each other at social events, she finally asked him out, and the rest is history!
