Lisa Sutton, Real Estate Broker for Coldwell Banker in Angel Fire, worked at Philmont Scout Ranch a few years back. While there her boss was diagnosed with breast cancer. Doug Palmer, long time Director at Philmont, decided to bring Casting For Recovery to the beauty of the Philmont and asked Lisa if she wanted to get involved. She agreed and has, for the past eight years, been on the planning committee and hosts the Mud Ball fundraising event to benefit Casting For Recovery. The money raised from this event goes 100% to fund a 2 1/2 day fly-fishing retreat for 14 ladies with breast cancer. These retreats take place in 27 states and one other country.
The mission of Casting for Recovery® (CfR) is to enhance the quality of life of women with breast cancer through a unique program that combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. The retreats offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life and experience healing connections with other women and nature. CfR’s retreats are open to breast cancer survivors of all ages, in all stages of treatment and recovery and are free to participants.
Casting for Recovery was the brainstorm of a plastic surgeon. She figured out that the movements made while fly-fishing were conducive for healing. Plus, being out in nature and connecting with other women who also have breast cancer, can ease the ability to cope with the disease.
The New Mexico CFR retreat will be held this year in Angel Fire in late September. They rely on donations to provide the retreats at no cost to the ladies. Lisa says their goal is to raise $20,000. It costs approximately $1500 per lady. She said Angel Fire Community Foundation has been great to help, Rough Riders 200 and Angel Fire Adventure Marathan both help. Now you can help! Mud Ball is the main fundraising event. Come dance the night away for a good cause.
Mudd Ball will be at Zebs Restaurat and Bar on April 30, 2016 starting at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20.00 a piece. They may be purchased at Coldwell Banker. The theme this year for Mudd Ball is 70’s Style. A prize will be awarded to the Best Dressed. A short comedy revision of The Dating Game will be provided for your entertainment. Then dance to the music of Big Boom Box. A silent auction and a raffle will also take place. If you would like to go earlier and enjoy a delicious dinner, Zebs has a full menu from which to choose.
If you cannot attend the Mudd Ball, you may send donation checks to Lisa Sutton, or online at CastingForRecovery.org. Make your checks out to Casting For Recovery. Please specify on the check it for the New Mexico retreat.
Also, if you know someone who would benefit from attending an inspiring weekend retreat with Casting For Recovery, they may apply online at CastingForRecovery.org. Lisa encourages them to re-apply if they don’t get in the first time.
