For the second summer, one of the absolute best new venues in Angel Fire is the Sunday Art + Farmer’s Market in Frontier Park. It is so nice to experience the sites and smells and sounds of a fresh outdoor market. Added are many other organic treats, local and regional artisans, a kid’s zone, made to order foods, and music to shop by. The atmosphere is enticing, as well as engaging. It gives all who participate the opportunity to connect with art, music, and food!
This year the Angel Fire Resort has hired Jennifer Helsel to coordinate all that is edible at the market. She also coordinates the Saturday Taos Farmers Market and has run a few in Albuquerque. The original concept of this weekly Farmer’s Market is to allow local and regional farmers a place to sell their goods in Angel Fire, as if they were on the side of the road, but in a more convenient spot and where consumers would know they would be selling, on a consistent schedule.
The cornerstone produce vendor is Jerry Neal. He is based out of Chama, New Mexico. Jerry brings in freshly picked produce from various farmers in New Mexico and Colorado, around the Palisades and Grand Junction area. His cantaloupes and watermelons are from Pecos and Midland Texas. (I was excited to see yellow meated watermelons! They are so sweet and have that melt in your mouth goodness!) Jerry said he had worked construction for years in the blistering heat of Texas, when his daughter suggested he come to New Mexico where she lived, to cool down and set up a side of the road watermelon stand. So that is exactly what he did. The first truck load he brought sold out in a matter of hours. He still sells out of his stand, close to Farmington, NM and has added more fruits and vegetables and has great success selling in Angel Fire.
You’ll also find many other fresh food products including organic eggs, gluten free breads, coffee cakes, cookies, sconces, cupcakes, jellies and jams and cheeses, fresh beef and of course fresh roasted green chiles.
This year the Resort has teamed up with Art Up Northern New Mexico to sponsor and coordinate all things art or not edible, with a large scale of homemade products. Your shopping experience may include skincare products that are made from the vendor’s own herb and flower gardens, homemade doggie treats, massage by the minute, fresh flowers, pottery, jewelry, handbags, and art made from wood, metal, oils, watercolor, fabric, pinecones and/or glass.

Then after you load up on fruits and vegetables, fresh roasted Hatch green chiles and other wonderful items for the week, wander over to the Kids Zone for free face painting and or relax on the giant beanbag chairs! You will be delighted to know all ages are welcome to get their faces painted. The face painters use vegan non-toxic water soluble hypo allergenic paint. Cassandra, head face painter, said, “It is the happiest paint in the world! We use only happy paint.” Well that makes me happy! And now included at the Art & Farmer’s Market is free yoga at 11:00 am. That makes me happy, too.
There are only 3 Sundays left to shop and enjoy the Art + Farmer’s Market, so make plans to attend. If you have any questions or would like to set up a booth and become part of this awesome Sunday market, there is plenty of room for you! Food vendors visit http://www.angelfirecoolsummer.com/market/, all other vendors visit http://artup-nnm.org/programs/art-farmers-market/ to fill out an application.
Maybe I’ll see you there!
