11th Annual Garden Tour
Each year as I take the annual garden tour, I am always pleasantly surprised by the homes and gardens seemingly hidden away in the Moreno Valley. This year’s Angel Fire Garden Club Tour featured six gardens in Black Lake. It was nice experiencing new places and faces. Tour Co-Chairs Diane Peterson, Fannie Mackie, and J.J. Huddleston did a wonderful job. But they didn’t do it without the help, time and talent of their fellow garden club members and many others in the community. Committee Chairs Ann Supple-Registration, Carol Rupp-Poster Artwork, Diane Peterson-Gardens, Dorothy Thrasher-Silent Auction, Fannie Mackie- Tickets, Jan Shank- Publicity, JJ Huddleston- Brochure, Keller Williams-Brochure Printing, Larry Layden- Traffic Control, Maria Beck- Sign Painter, Stephanie Hamilton- Centerpieces, Stuart Hamilton- map Maker, Susan Milligan- gift Bags all did an outstanding job! The tour ended with a luncheon and silent auction at the Angel Fire Resort Country Club. Winners of the Garden Hat contest were Joan Douglass, Conni Elkins, and Diane Peterson.
The Angel Fire Garden Club was federated in 1991 with 14 members and now has 62! As their website states, “The club designs programs and events to inform and inspire high country gardeners and to provide education to help preserve and enhance the natural beauty of our mountain environment”. It is amazing what these people can grow at the elevations we live! They help create the beauty in and around Angel Fire. Members of the club take care of three signature gardens in Angel Fire; the Butterfly Garden at Shuter Library, the Garden in the median of North Angel Fire Road, and the Blue Star Memorial Garden at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. Last year members received four 1st place State Garden Club awards, one Honorable Mention South Central region award, and two National Garden Clubs, Inc. Certificates of Commendation. That’s awesome!
Officers for the 2013-2015 term are President, Jo Ann Layden; 2nd Vice President, Johnese Turri; and Secretary, Dorothy Thrasher. If you interested in becoming a garden club member they would love to have you! Meetings are the second Monday of each month.
